Earlier this year Google announced that it would soon factor page speed (along with its other usual metrics) in its search results. This change is set to come into effect May 2021. This is an attempt from Google to provide a “holistic picture of the quality of a user’s experience on a web page”.

So what does this mean for you? Well, if your website is on the slower end of the scale you could see a drop in your websites ranking on Google. Luckily we have time on our side and there are some easy changes you can make to lessen the blow:

  1. Optimise your images as you upload them
A really common mistake we see a lot of our clients make is they upload images to their website much larger than they need to be. This slows down your website and can cause a negative experience for your end user. To aid in this, we recommend scaling your images down before you upload them. There are many online resources that can help you out with this. Another alternative is to reach out to us and we can implement a plugin that optimises your images as you upload them
  2. Reduce the amount of video content
Videos are great – they quickly convey a message or idea and cater to many different types of users and the ways they gather information. This being said, they do slow down your site. Ask yourself “is this video really necessary?” If you’re answering no, it might be time to say goodbye
  3. Keep plugins to a minimum
Another common mistake we see from many sites we’ve inherited over the years is an overload of unnecessary plugins. These plugins add to your page speed so if you’re wondering if its needed, contact us and we’ll clear out what’s not necessary

While these things alone will help to a point, to really maximise your page speed (and thus your Google ranking) you’ll need professional help. That’s where we come in.
